Feet and Sunflowers by Glen Armstrong

FEET AND SUNFLOWERS

The breeze smells like feet and sun-
flowers.

We will never find the pieces.

We have been losing faith
and watching Clan of the Cave Bear,

and I’m afraid

that our lack of progress
is being witnessed by a deity

as distracted as are we.

MACY’S SIGN

I declare myself commandant
of all you desire.

I scream to the top
of the mega-mall: America

no longer is.
A nation fulfilled

in every way.
The moon winks through

the skylight,
and the wishing fountain swells

with delicious blue crabs.
You desire an end

of declaration and command.
The Japanese loosely

translate what happens next
as: two birds

from beyond nest happily
in a Macy’s sign.
