Uncaged at The Birdcage

The UK spoken word scene is thriving, each month there are more and more dynamic, fun performance poetry events happening around the country. One such event is: Uncaged at The Birdcage on Bagholme Road in Lincoln, run by Outspoken poet Ron Booth, and is held on every first Wednesday of the month. Local poetry collective  Outspoken Poets only formed in March 2017, and quickly gained popularity with the events they set up and an article was published in the Lincolnshire Echo about their plans for creating a vibrant poetry scene here in Lincoln.

There  was already a long established spoken word night at The Jolly Brewer that has been running for a few years, also a new Poetry Slam at The Zing café, plus Word Theatre at NewTheatre Royal. Setting up new events on behalf of Outspoken Poets was the task of Charlie Gualtieri, Nathan Dean and Ron Booth, these were a Jazz Poetry night with  jazz trio Djanco playing along to the poetry. Scratchy Pens is a philosophy café style evening discussing a guest poets work plus a creative half with artists, voice coaches etc.

Uncaged at The Birdcage has become a very popular evening Host  Ron Booth, wanted the evening to include spoken word, flash fiction, comedy and music. Each month there is a set from a special guest… past guests have included spoken word artists, a beat boxer, comedians and singers. The Christmas edition held on the 6th December was a lively night with an enthusiastic crowd of audience and performers. Many first timers took part and displayed what amazing talent we have here  in Lincolnshire. Long gone are the stuffy pretentious days of poetry in half empty rooms. The Birdcage with it’s great atmosphere has established itself as a must go to event attended by regular followers and those new to spoken word open mic nights.

The great thing about performance poetry is that it’s not just For spectators. If you want to get up and read self penned poetry about your dog who is a lovable rogue, the bigoted politician or the bastard who broke your heart, then you can get a slot at dedicated open mic nights. So come on down and check out Uncaged at The Birdcage, it’s a vibrant entertaining evening which has been running since April 2017, and is a platform for anyone who wants to share their words, or even read the work of their favorite poets. The idea is to encourage and inspire others to take part, and to write and perform, who knows we may discover the next poet laureate.
