Judge Kevin Higgins talks about his selections

I was impressed by the generally high standard of the entries. So many lively and witty and sad and clever poems, all speaking in their own essential voice. Every poet whose work I read here had something to offer, and potential. The ten poets who receive Honourable Mention are all clearly profoundly serious about the art of poetry and, crucially, they manage to combine that seriousness with an ability to have fun writing poems; at least that’s how it seemed to this reader. The top three placed poets soared a little above the other entries in that their poems had a consistent quality; every poem had something excellent about it. The winner is a poet of exceptional bravery, a pretty sensational original voice. I hope the poetry world doesn’t tame her, though no doubt it will try.
